Type specimen: Collected by Johann Baptist von Spix in April 1819 in Joazeiro, Rio São Francisco, Brazil, used by Johann Wagler in the description of the species in 1832.
Etymology: Cyanopsitta means ‚blue parrot‘; Spix is named after Johann Baptist von Spix.

Based on the limited data available on this species, they can live between 20 and 40 years, averaging 28 to 29 years. It is estimated that captive birds can live about 10 years longer than wild specimens. The oldest recorded Spix’s macaw hatched in 1976 and, at the ripe old age of 35, produced two chicks in 2010.
