A Singapura is one of the most compact cat breeds, known for its large eyes and ears, ticked coat, and blunt tail. It was reportedly bred from the three „Drain Cats“ brought to Singapore in the 1970s. It was later discovered that the cats were originally transported from the United States to Singapore before being sent back to the US.
Investigations by the Cat Fanciers‘ Association (CFA) revealed that no violations had occurred and that the Singapura retained its status as a natural breed.
In 1975, after working in Singapore, Tommy and Hal Meadow returned to the United States with what they believed to be three native brown-tickled cats.[1] The three cats, consisting of a pair of female and male kittens that were part of the same litter, plus an additional female kitten, formed the basis for the establishment of the Singapura.
The name refers to the Malay name for Singapore. In 1981, a breeder traveled to Singapore and found a cat at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that fit the Singapura profile (with only a tail). The cat was brought to the United States and then enrolled in the breeding program.

The Singapura was registered for championship competitions by TICA in 1979. TICA registered it as a champion competition in 1979. It was also recognized by the CFA in 1982 and received championship status in 1988.
At that time, breeders discovered that rare litters would produce solid-colored kittens because they were born with the recessive genes for solid colors. In the hope that the Singapura could reproduce naturally as intended, breeders often conduct tests to identify those with recessive genes and eliminate them from their breeding programs. Two years later, it was discovered that there were three cats in the breeding program with this gene.
